Columbia Foundation Receives $10,000 from Northwest Savings Bank
Howard County’s community foundation, The Columbia Foundation, which raises, manages and distributes funds to support Howard County nonprofits, received $10,000 from Northwest Savings Bank to establish an unrestricted endowment fund in the bank’s name.
“At Northwest Savings Bank, we take very seriously our commitment to the communities we serve,” said Charles P. “Phil” Roe, office manager for Northwest Savings Bank in Marriottsville, Md. “There are many good causes in Howard County, but it’s tough to support them all. The Columbia Foundation gives donors a broader impact because they’re better equipped to channel funds. They do a great job.”
Income from The Columbia Foundation’s unrestricted endowment is the primary source of funds for the foundation’s competitive grant programs that support the county’s nonprofit human services, arts, cultural, educational and civic organizations. More than 300 individuals, families and businesses have created endowment funds.
Last year, The Columbia Foundation awarded nearly $600,000 in grants to 100 nonprofits that provided programs and services to 178,000 community residents. During the course of the year, The Columbia Foundation’s efforts supported a crisis intervention center for homeless families, funded transportation services for older residents, provided computers and printers to middle school students without access to computers at home, supported the annual Columbia Festival of the Arts and provided scholarships to Howard County students.
“From human services to art and education organizations, Howard County has a lot of organizations in need. Those who have the ability have the responsibility to support these good causes. We all benefit from the types of organizations The Columbia Foundation supports,” Roe said.
The Columbia Foundation, founded in 1969, has awarded more than $12 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the Foundation’s endowment supported by more than 300 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
