After the Conventions: Who Will Win the 2012 Presidential Election, Obama or Romney?
Now that the Democratic and Republican delegates have officially chosen their nominees, Patch wants to know: Who are you betting on?
It's official: With President Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Charlotte Thursday night, both the Republicans and Democrats have formally chosen their nominees for the 2012 presidential election. Let the real race begin.
A lot can change between now and Nov. 6: Gaffes, scandals or even major international news events could shift the dynamics of the campaign.
The latest Gallup Polls show registered voters preferring Obama to Mitt Romney by just one percentage point, 47 percent to 46 percent. A USA Today/Gallup poll taken just before the party conventions found American voters think Obama is more likeable, but trust Romney more to handle the economy.
Pundits have been busy for months handicapping the major-party candidates on various factors: incumbent advantage, fundraising clout, even religion.
Patch wants to know: Regardless of who you support for President, who do you think will actually claim victory in November?
Vote in our poll below, and let us know your thoughts in our comments section.

OBAMA: "I'll use the money we're no longer spending on war to pay down our debt and put more people back to work - rebuilding roads and bridges, schools and runways. After two wars that have cost us thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars, it's time to do some nation-building right here at home." THE FACTS: The idea of taking war savings to pay for other programs is budgetary sleight of hand, given that the wars were paid for with increased debt. Obama can essentially "pay down our debt," as he said, by borrowing less now that war is ending. But he still must borrow to do the "extra nation-building" he envisions.

China is also building our bridges right now. Obama is hiring the Chinese for the huge government contracts taking work away from US workers. How does he plan to get jobs back this way? He has also decreasing the Military and decreasing benefits to the military leaving the US vulnerable to terrorists. We might save on Miltary now but we may pay later with human life. If they want to make cuts lets stop taking elaborate vacations, stop flying the boat gas hog, cut politicians pay for life and charge all the them the same Health Care "TAX" everyone else is going to pay which they have excluded themselves from. Give government contracts back to America!

I think the RNC and DNC were pretty much a wash as far as learning anything new. The speeches by Romney and Obama both danced around hard issues on the economy and jobs. I do think the DNC created an unneeded problem and a few doubts in the minds of Independents....perhaps even some Democratic voters.... with their intentional exclusion of "God" and "Jerusalem" from their platform. It didn't look good, and and the voting fiasco that followed, plus the cover-up lies, especially those of Debbie Waserman Shultz, made it look even worse.
Still, I think the election will likely boil down to the televised debates in October when both Romney and Obama will be forced to answer tough questions and provide specific details about their divergent economic plans.

Amazing that neither Bush I or Bush II were mentioned at the RNC convention. I guess they don't want to remind people of a Bush III presidency if Romney wins. Also amazing the the "Support Our Troops" party didn't mention our troops once during the RNC convention. A peek into what Republicans really think of our troops

David.....Romney and the Republicans left out references to war; Obama and the Democrats left out God. Maybe we should call it a wash. I'm more curious about why both Clinton (when he wasn't praising himself) and Obama spoke about past Republican presidents when describing the greatness of America. A number of TV pundits also picked up on it and openly wondered why?

Michael, they were trying to show that they aren't so arrogant as to think that they are the only party with good ideas, AND that we need to get back to a place where both sides can work together for the good of the country, rather than the obstructionist philosophy of the current GOP. Most, if not all, of the past Republican Presidents would be too moderate for today's GOP, which has (sadly) allowed itself to be co-opted by the Tea Party.

The Republican goal since Obama took office was to make him a one term President. Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, was dumb enough to say this to the media. The result has been a Republican party that was willing to sacrifice the economic survival of the country by opposing everything this President has done to move it forward in terms of jobs, immigration, health care, reducing debt, etc. In other words, Republicans have put the interests of their party above the interests of the country. That's what I call UNAMERICAN!

David, understand this is not the same Republican Party we once knew. They have been taken over by the American Taliban (Tea Party). True Republicans would have worked with Democrats to fix America's problems through compromise. Until Americans oust politicians who serve their Party & not America, we will continue to have these problems.

"When Americans are divided by class and pitted against one another for political gain it tears our nation apart. The us versus them mentality that the Democrats have instilled in a large portion of this great country is troubling. All you ever hear from the left is envy, contempt, and division. The Democrats have perfected the use of the class warfare argument and have systematically driven a deep wedge into the hearts of many Americans.".........That is UNAMERICAN!

Here's the deal...both Democrats and republicans have played an equal role in screwing our Country into the ground.
The vast majority of Americans are dumbed to apathy, and remain in the realm of not really caring about what goes on in the corrupt political arena....corruption fuels apathy.It's all a blur to the majority and both parties seem to prefer it that way.
Our Country needs to completely bottom out, much like a drug addict has to before any degree of recovery can begin.
Once we have successfully achieved the point of rock bottom the masses will begin to wake up and pay attention....problem is, both parties fear this and will continue to project false information about perceived recovery. If either party were capable of leading our country properly, we would never have fallen to this point.
A vote for either of these candidates will only prolong the agony and continue to perpetuate the American illusion...straight or phillips?...that is the question...

As a Republican, I'm disappointed to admit that David and DawnP are right. The RNC didn't bring up Bush's presidency, because he completely decimated the GOP by facilitating massive corporate greed and compromising all fiscal conservatism. The void in party leadership allowed self-promoting talk show hosts and Tea Party extremists to become the power block of the party. Because these people do not know how to lead with real ideas, they do nothing but oppose Obama at every turn, whether or not it helps the country. This is akin to how the Taliban and other extremists operate. The Tea Party's extremism is what's pushing so many sane Republican moderates to quit, which makes the GOP seem even more crazy. I supported Romney when he was the only moderate in a GOP race with Tea Party nuts and other ridiculous choices. Now I can't tell who he is anymore. I do know that Paul Ryan is definitely not credible, just like Sarah Palin wasn't. The GOP unfortunately can't afford to have the Tea Party go off on its own, as it would make the Dems an overwhelming majority. But then the Tea Party is too extreme to stand on its own, so it needs the legitimacy of the GOP. It's a marriage made in Hell! If we don't want to turn into a fascist Christian state with just two classes, rich & poor, I'm sad to say we must vote for the lesser of two evils and that is Obama.

I agree with Mr. Eldersburg. The Republican Party unfortunately seems to be memorized by extreme Tea Party ideology. The rapidly growing diverse demographic make up of our nation is not going in that direction. The infusion of immigrants into America as well documented (ex Ellis Island, New York City) is what made our country great.
I am a conservative Democrat that leans toward Republican values so I do support various stances of the Republican ideology. But in this election, I have been dismayed with Mitt Romney's vacillating tongue and fabrication and his detachment from just being sensible in his ideology. He is intolerably uncaring of people (the 47%). I was somewhat optimistic when Mitt Romney was nominated. However, I have concluded after 6 months of listening to him that he is unsuitable to serve as a President. I speak not only as a Vietnam Veteran; I also speak on behalf of our teachers and our first responders (police, firemen, & ambulance personnel) who Mr. Romney referenced as people looking for handouts. Although I have no problem with people who are successful and as a result have become wealthy, I am unwilling to support a presidential candidate who is arrogant and uncaring of hardworking people. I will vote for Barach Obama in this election. He endorses lending a hand to help people contribute and become productive members of our nation.

I don't know about you, but I am so glad these conventions are over with. I couldn't bring myself to sit through hour after hour, night after night of each convention for two weeks, but I did pick up salient pieces here and there from both sides. Neither side represents all my core values as a limited-government conservative. I can go with a third-party candidate that represents more of what I believe, but just as with Ross Perot in 1992, a third party does nothing more than split the vote. We lost our government incrementally and we'll have to take that government back incrementally. There is just too much at stake with this next election. Just look at the Supreme Court. There are 5 justices who are in their late 70s or early 80s. The next president will be able to stack the court and direct the philosophical direction of this country for years to come. I urge every American to consider the actions and words of those running for president. Pay no attention t o the platforms. They're nice guidelines but they mean squat in reality. Look at the actions and heart of the men who want your vote and then decide accordingly. In a little over two months it will all be over, one way or the other.

In layman terms, I believe that the foundation of our nation is still in tact. The sill plate however is filled with rot and is in desperate need of replacement before the foundation begins to crumble. However, if the sill plate is replaced and the gutters and downspouts are allowed to keep leaking more of the same rot will occur and the foundation will in fact fail.The problem stems from the top...above both of the presidential puppet candidates...it' trickles down to rot the core of our countries foundation and needs to be addressed. The choices offered for our next president only contribute to the illusion that the top controls. The massive majority of apathetic citizens add fuel to the cause from the top...a vote for either will buy more of the same and prolong the agony of our nations deterioration.

4.) Executes treaties with foreign countries, that must be approved by the Senate

In the decade since Sept. 11, 2001, this country has comprehensively reduced civil liberties in the name of an expanded security state. If you're old enough to vote this year, then you're old enough to remember
a Democratic president with a Democratic Congress;
a Republican president with a Democratic Congress;
a Republican president with a Republican Congress; and
a Democratic president with a Republican Congress.
Taken together, these four periods exhaust all the ways power can be split between the two major parties in Washington. What did all these periods have in common? Government got bigger.
That’s a problem, not because government is always bad, but because the proper functions of government do not require it to be very big. Government today is big not primarily because of waste or indolence, but because we have asked it to do too many things. And now, thanks to both Democrats and Republicans, the relentless growth of our government has brought us to financial calamitOur government can't pay its bills, but it won't stop borrowing or spending. As a result, the government is currently headed for insolvency. Our economy badly needs jobs and investment from the private sector, but instead of encouraging private enterprise our elected officials continue to concentrate power and money in Washington. We need to change course, and we need to do it now.
The new course we should chart is not really new to people who know our history.

IMHO I believe the next "national emergency" will be of the financial matter. The federal reserve has initiated an unlimited quantitative easing to the tune of $40 Billion a month forever. QE essentially is an influx of capital (electronic money created by the fed AKA more debt) which will lead to inflation and God forbid hyperinflation.As of January 2013 the FDIC stops offering 100% coverage for all insured deposits. Lets not forget the darkest storm cloud the unregulated derivatives market (estimated to be somewhere north of $160 trillion dollars) that was responsible for the 2008 sub prime mortgage collapse. Instead of regulating the derivative markets the good folks in charge turned a blind eye (and have greatly profited from doing so) to the derivative markets and thus has exponentially expanded the derivative markets. Imagine waking up one morning and finding there has been a "banking holiday" declared where no matter how much money you have in your bank accounts you are unable to withdraw a single cent. Think it cant happen? Better think again, all the necessary pieces are in place for a financial collapse. When a normally law abiding family finds they have been lied to by their government and their money is worthless they will do what ever is necessary to provide for their family and that will result in civil unrest at the very least. We all know what civil unrest leads to.....martial law.
