Cyclist Struck Near Furnace Avenue in Hit-and-Run

Anne Arundel County Police Department seeks driver of silver/gray Nissan with damage to passenger-side mirror.

A cyclist is in critical condition after a July 1 hit-and-run on Ridge Road, Anne Arundel County police said.

At 7:36 a.m. on Sunday, a cyclist was reportedly struck on Ridge Road by Furnace Avenue, said police. Officials arrived to find a bicycle in the road and a man down an embankment in the woods.

The man, later identified as Stephen Eugene Shenefiel, 64, was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and is in critical condition, police said. Police listed Shenefiel as a resident of Prescott, AZ.

Police reported after investigation that the driver of a sedan veered slightly off the road heading southbound, then struck Shenefield as the car re-entered the roadway. The driver left the scene in the car.

An investigation indicated that Shenefiel was struck by a Nissan (possibly a Sentra) built before 1993. The color of the parts recovered at the scene are light silver or gray, possibly with pearl in the paint, police said.

The car could have damage to the front bumper on the passenger side, and may have damage to the right front headlight and marker light. The car is also missing part of the housing to the mirror assembly on the right side.

An investigation is ongoing.
