On this day in 1997, the Baltimore Sun reported that a North Laurel woman died when her car crashed into a telephone pole in Elkridge. She was driving on Dorsey Road at 2:30 a.m. and was not wearing her seatbelt when her vehicle jumped the curb, struck the pole, she was ejected and the vehicle overturned on her, according to the report.
Motorists are 75 percent less likely to be killed in rollover crashes if they are wearing their seatbelts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Maryland, not wearing a seatbelt is a primary offense, meaning that police can pull over drivers for not wearing them.
