'Possibly Heavy' Snow Forecast for Howard County Thursday

The National Weather Service has issued the following alert.

Ready for snow?

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for Howard County and much of the Baltimore and DC region Thursday and forecasts a possible five - or more - inches of snow.

A winter storm watch means there is the potential for significant snowfall, as opposed to a warning, which indicates a storm is imminent.

Precipitation will begin as a mix of snow and rain Thursday morning, changing to snow later in the morning and through the afternoon, according to the watch.

"Snow may be heavy at times during the afternoon and evening," according to the storm watch, which means the evening commute might be affected.

In addition to snow, NWS is forecasting winds gusting as fast as 20 mph and temperatures in the low-to-mid 30s.

Officials from the Maryland State Highway Administration said Wednesday afternoon they are preparing their equipment for the storm, but are not salting roads yet, as rain is supposed to come before the storm Thursday, and it could wash away the salt.

The morning commute is not anticipated to be difficult, but the afternoon drive might be, state officials said.

“Storms during afternoon rush hours pose certain challenges because SHA snow plows are driving in rush hour traffic, making snow clearing more difficult," said Melinda B. Peters, SHA Administrator, in a statement. "If the forecast calls for snow during any commute and you want to avoid hours of traffic congestion, it is best to leave early, telecommute or stay late until the snow stops.”

Time to run out and purchase the "panic pack" 1 Gallon of milk, 1 loaf of Bread, 1 pack of toilet tissue. Don't know what it is that makes people rush for these items...don't they purchase them regularly anyway? Oh well, I guess it is winter after all! Be safe out there.

LG, it's because these are the items which stores run out of the soonest, due to (3 of them) needing to be fresh. When delivery trucks cannot run, the stores run out. Now, TP, you should all be stocking up with a case from Cosco every so often!

Actually it's bread, milk, eggs and toilet paper - enough for 2 weeks snowed in! It's an ongoing "disease" since I was a kid - a very long time ago!

I think I will definitely need to replenish my emergency chocolate supply. In honor of the snow, of course.

Joseph, thanks in advance for plowing! We'd like to stay home, really. We just need the govt. and schools to act wisely and sanely in advance of storms. Of course, when the snow may or may not start in the middle of a work and school day, that is rather difficult.

I always thought this craziness was a New England thing.

When I moved to RI in 2003, I remember just before every snow storm you'd see people struggling with multiple gallons of milk and I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was.

What I later learned was that the trend started in the 1970s. It seems after the Northeast was hit in '78 by a strong blizzard, people would panic every snow storm thereafter.

That's what I thought, too, Allan. A loaf of bread and a gallon of milk from Stop & Shop. I feel like more often than not, though, it actually snowed in Rhode Island.
