HCPD: Man Shot by Police Threatened to Kill Officers, Himself
Percy Holland of Baltimore City was killed by a Howard County police officer in Columbia, according to police.
A Baltimore City man was shot and killed by a Howard County police officer Thursday evening in Columbia, according to a statement from the Howard County Police Department (HCPD).
This was the second fatal police-involved shooting in Howard County in the past year; in November, police killed a 19-year-old Elkridge man who refused to drop a weapon that police later found was a pellet gun.
In the most recent incident, police were in a standoff with Percy Holland, 32, of Baltimore City, after he allegedly held his estranged girlfriend at gunpoint and assaulted her Thursday morning.
The woman escaped and called 911, and Holland fled with the couple's 2-year-old child, according to HCPD, which located Holland at an acquaintance's Columbia residence near the 9000 block of Constant Course.
According to HCPD, Holland shouted at police: "You're going to have to kill me or I'm going to kill you" and "I have a gun, I will use it."
Holland reportedly exited the back door, claimed he had a gun and made "furtive movements" toward one of the officers and the officer shot him, according to the statement from police.
Police said Holland was later pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital. It is unconfirmed how many times Holland was shot and where he was struck, according to the official statement.
In the November shooting in Elkridge, HCPD reported that police shot Jeffrey Nichols eight times.
When officers looking for Holland arrived at the house in Columbia on Aug. 9, HCPD said family members told them Holland said police “weren’t going to take him alive.”
The 2-year-old child was not at the scene of the shooting and was later located unharmed at the home of a relative, according to police.
Police said they did not find a gun at the scene.
HCPD said a patrol supervisor who has been with the force for 12 years was identified as the shooter and has been placed on administrative leave during an internal affairs investigation.
