Another project making headway around Fort Meade is the widening of MD-175. Anne Arundel County struck a deal with a local developer to widen the highway, a project which had been in limbo; the county lacked state transportation funding but needed to prepare for the influx of workers as a result of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC).

And BRAC wasn’t the only thing bringing bodies to the base. When Westboro Baptist Church brought a handful of members to Meade High and Meade Middle Schools to against homosexuality on April 14, hundreds responded with a counter-protest.
