Meet the Superintendent Candidates
The Board of Education is hosting "meet and greets" with superintendent finalists on Monday.
Since current Superintendent Sydney Cousin will step down effective July 1, the Howard County Board of Education has selected two finalists in its search for his successor:
- Dr. S. Dallas Dance, chief school officer for the Houston Independent School District in Texas
- Dr. Renee A. Foose, deputy superintendent of the Baltimore County Public Schools
The public and school system employees are invited to meet the candidates on Monday, March 26, at the Department of Education building in Ellicott City.
From 2 to 4 p.m., each candidate will have one hour to meet with attendees informally. Then from 6 to 8 p.m., the school board will host a question-and-answer forum in which each candidate will have one hour to respond to questions from the audience.
The forum will be broadcast live online through HCPSS TV and on cable channels 42 (Verizon) and 95 (Comcast).

I think I'd ask them if they were responsible fiscal planners. We need a superintendent who will plan for our childrens' future school sites by requesting money in the school budget NOW for land to be purchased and put into a land bank. It is because the school system has not requested monies to be available to purchase land that we are in the fix we are in. The next superintendent needs to be a strong, independent advocate for our children and the children of the future.

We need more than just the budget to buy land, the new Superintendent and our school board should have greater input beyond the Open Close Schools chart to overall development in the county. The need to plan for schools should be a cooperative action between DPZ, the administration, BOE and HCPSS. If the budget is not in place to build the schools we need or to provide the resources to support the schools we have at capacity now, then there should not be any building allotments or grand plans for Howard County development until a way to fund the school budget is in place to meet our needs now and in the future. If Plan Howard 2030 calls for a large number of units in the Rt.1- 40 corridors and New Town then the HCPSS should have the first pick of land in those areas before any zoning is changed for increased density. Let's not make the same mistakes that were made back in 2003 with Rt. 1 revitalization.

Flip a coin and move on to the removal process. Neither one of these people have
been anywhere long enough or done anything outstanding beyond ride the
questionable coat tails of an education system which is on the verge of bringing
America to its knees. They are here for the money, self serving, plain and
simple. A professional student who can quietly suck down whatever they are told
and move from agency to agency in search of promotion is a far different person
from one who has built something.
