The boom in popularity of Ravens-themed cupcakes from an Elkridge bakery has grown this season and is expected to be at a high for Super Bowl parties next month, staff there said this week.
This is the second year Kupcakes & Co, which opened in June of 2011 in Elkridge, has offered the Ravens-themed confections, and fans that had the cupcakes at game-viewing parties in the past tend to order them again, said baker Joanne Jrabowski.
“I think people are superstitious, so I think people who have ordered them prior will order them again,” she said.
For the AFC Championship, the store made 210 Ravens cupcakes, staff said; for the Super Bowl, they are planning to make 280 or more.
The cupcakes come in either chocolate buttercream or vanilla buttercream flavors, and have a purple-icing center. On the top are Ravens jerseys with various numbers of some of the most popular players, staff said.
The cost is $3.50 per Ravens cupcake, with volume discounts available.
Staff at the shop, owned Michelle Kupiec, recommended pre-ordering before the Super Bowl at least three days in advance, but it is not essential.
The success of the Ravens has been “great for business and it’s also good for fun talk around the shop,” Jrabowski said.

Why is it that they can sell a doughnut for under a dollar but a cupcake cost $3.50 ?

The $3.50 cupcakes are the bakery's boutique line, I'm told. As it was explained to me, it takes some doing to carve out a center in the cupcakes and fill them with purple icing, and there is an art to creating those jersey tops as well.

Even the normal cupcakes are expensive. Way overpriced for a regular sized cupcake that I can make in my kitchen with a box of Duncan Hines. lol
