Carry-on Changes Again at BWI, Reagan National and Dulles Airports

Despite earlier reports, small knives are still not allowed on flights.

Earlier this year, Patch reported that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) would relax some of the strict carry-on luggage rules, starting April 25.

Now, The Washington Post is reporting that the relaxed rules have been postponed.

Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, made the announcement, asking that the TSA look into the situation more closely “so we can have a sensible security policy with stakeholder buy-in.”

Previously, the TSA had announced that small knives (with blades less that 2.36 inches) and certain pieces of sporting equipment such as souvenir mini-baseball bats and up to two golf clubs would be permitted inside the cabin of airplanes.

The security of airport workers and passengers appeared to drive the 180-degree policy change. Labor groups that represent security and airline workers had been speaking out and organizing petitions as early as March 7, just two days after the original announcement by the TSA.

In April, Thompson decried the announcement as well, stating, “This agency, paid for by the American public, must understand that its mission is to protect people — passengers and crew.”

There is currently no information available as to when the TSA will review the policy, but for now, continue to check small knives, or leave them at home before traveling.
