Living with Mental Illness, Political Fundraising: Howard County Blog Roundup

Patch highlights some of the best of the Howard County blogosphere.

Shame by HoCoHouseHon

In an incredibly candid post, local blogger Alice describes her experience living with Bipolar disorder. Read the whole post.

I'm a real person. Some of you know me only through this blog, though most others I think are friends and family members. And being a real person, disregarding any online persona, I have to face the every day life of being a young woman with a chemical imbalance which makes me cry like Van Gogh and smile like the Mona Lisa. It makes me play the piano with the wet cough of Chopin; it makes me immobile, sometimes, with perfectionism and fear. These are my mornings and evenings, my afternoon teas, the way I fall asleep and the way I wake up at 7:23 craving a cup of coffee.

HoCo Rising on County Executive Ken Ulman's Chances for Governor

Tom Coale, of HoCo Rising, recently analyzed Ulman's chances of winning the governorship in 2014 despite being from Howard County. In a Jan. 16 post, Coale posited that a portion of Ulman's electability will be based on how the development of Columbia turns out and whether he is credited for it.

Columbia.  Ken finds himself in the enviable position of being in the control booth during a transformative time for not only our County, but the entire State.  Columbia could be the next great thing.  Columbia could find itself mentioned with Baltimore, Annapolis, and Silver Spring as a center for business, recreation, and urban living.  Columbia could have the next great Maryland recreational park in Symphony Woods.  Ken Ulman could be the name associated with all of the "new big things" happening in Maryland, making his opponents look like "old Maryland politics."

Marshallow Man on "The 2014 Money Chase"

Columbia resident Bill Woodcock, who regularly blogs on local politics and is better known as the Marshallow Man on his blog 53 Beers on Tap, broke down the latest fundraising figures for potential Howard County Executive candidates in a Jan. 17 post:

Looking at the 2014 campaign for Howard County Executive.... errrrr, sorry, for HOWARD COUNTY, Courtney Watson has opened up a can of whoopass on the competition.  For those of you who consider Watson an underdog and not able to marshal whatever it takes to win... yuh, right.  After all, she only raised a little over $250K.  Allan Kittleman raised $170K and surprising to me, Calvin Ball outraised Guy Guzzone, $85K to $61K in 2012.

EverythingDogBlog Follows Progress of Harper's Choice Dog Park

Columbia Patch blogger Skye Anderson wrote in her EverythingDogBlog that a proposed dog park for Harper's Choice passed another hurdle last week.

The Village Board recommended the proposed site to the Columbia Association (CA). The Board also recommended 1.) a committee to assist with administration and maintenance and 2.) that CA work with the county on the parking issues.

Also, she noted that January is the third annual train your dog month, and wrote, "A well-trained dog is more confident, less timid and shy. When in doubt, he looks to you for guidance."
