Police Seatbelt, DUI Enforcement Memorial Day Weekend

The planned enforcement will take place both day and night leading up to Memorial Day.

Howard County police will be out in force this weekend pulling over drivers who aren't wearing seatbelts, as well as looking for impaired drivers.

The effort is part of a nationwide "Click It or Ticket" campaign that will run day and night through Memorial Day.

Highly visible seatbelt enforcement already began Tuesday on Main Street in Ellicott City, where police pulled over and ticketed drivers not wearing seat belts during the day.

A police spokesperson said although the intiative is countywide, they may concentrate their efforts in areas such as Main Street, Route 29 and Route 100.

In addition to seatbelt enforcement, police will also have a "saturation patrol" that will seek out impaired drivers.

Police reminded residents that they have a "zero tolerance" policy with those who do not wear seat belts. In addition, police asked citizens who plan on driving over Memorial Day not to consume alcohol, or make sure to designate a sober driver before doing so.
