Attention Shoppers: Loehmann's Is Closed

Discount designer retailer vanishes from Gateway Overlook shopping center in Elkridge before the holidays hit.

If you were thinking of doing some last-minute Christmas shopping at  in the Gateway Overlook shopping center, think again. The store known for its designer fashions at discounted prices has closed up shop in the retail plaza along MD-175 at I-95.

Last month, Loehmann's filed for bankruptcy in New York, where the company is headquartered. It was operating 48 stores and employed 1,900 people as of November 15, 2010, according to court documents. Amid the bankruptcy filings, corporate officials proposed a restructuring plan that included closing underperforming stores over a 12-month period. The Loehmann's corporate office could not be reached for comment about specifics regarding the Elkridge location.

This marks the second time in 15 years Loehmann's has undergone Chapter 11 proceedings. The last time it filed for bankruptcy was in 1999. Incidentally, the was recently acquired by a real estate investment company after its previous owner filed for bankruptcy.
