Lyndwood Giant to Customers: 'Fill Your Cart for a Cure'

“According to the National Institutes of Health, breast cancer affects  one in eight women, and during October, we’ll work together to make a difference," said Anthony Hucker, president of Landover-based Giant Food, in a written statement.

The chain announced last week that it was running various promotions at its 173 locations in the Maryland-Virginia-Delaware-D.C. area for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For every reusable pink grocery bag it sells in October, Giant will donate five cents to the Capital Breast Care Center.

For each "pink awareness" bouquet purchased in the floral department, the store will give 25 cents to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

And it doesn't end with bags and flowers.

Select items from Proctor & Gamble, Giant and General Mills carry rewards with them to the register, like gift cards and discounts; plus Giant said in a news release that it will donate a portion of the proceeds to a local organization that supports breast cancer research, education, and awareness.

According to the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, people wait an average of five minutes in line at the grocery store in the United States.

During that time, 13 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

This year, more than 39,000 women will die of breast cancer, reports the National Cancer Institute.
