PHOTOS: Cindy's Soft Serve Closes for Season

The ice cream stand on Route 1 signals fall is here.

The favorite place in Elkridge for ice cream has shuttered until 2013.

Cindy's Soft Serve, which won the Patch competition for Best Ice Cream in Elkridge, is closed until April.

When temperatures drop, so does the public's appetite for standing in line to get a cone or a snowball, a Cindy's staffer told Patch. That's why the stand shuts down between the first weekend in October until the following April.

According to a report from CNN, vendors of frozen treats must diversify in winter to stay successful, by selling products to supermarkets, creating seasonal flavors or adding coffee drinks to their menus.

Baskin Robbins recently created an apple crisp flavor for fall and Red Robin designed an Oktoberfest milkshake with Sam Adams beer and vanilla soft-serve.

The owner of the Elkridge soft-serve stand, Cindy Quick, is also the owner of Cindy's Spirits, a liquor store open year-round in the Elkridge Corners Plaza.

Cindy's Soft Serve will reopen the first weekend in April.
