POLL: What Do You Think of New Elkridge Sign?

The highway sign is on I-95 south before MD Route 100.

In the weeks following the at Arundel Mills, a sign on I-95 south cropped up advertising "Elkridge/Maryland Live Casino."

What do you think about the sign? Take our poll and tell us in the comments.

Thanks to Michael Brehm and Twitter user "Mac Sauce" for the idea and photo, respectively. If you ever have story ideas or something you'd like us to look into, email me at elizabeth.janney@patch.com.

I admit, I am bias since I don't like the Maryland Live Casino at Arundel Mills mall. As a result, I definitely hate signs which has its name, including the on in this picture which is included on I-95. I feel if the casinos can have signs on I-95 (as well as other places such as the Parkway), why are other businesses (like malls, businesses, etc.) excluded from having signs like this on major highways?

I certainly don't like it. Granted, I too am biased against the casino, I don't feel that it deserves the prominent green signage it's been given. I especially dislike the association with Elkridge, as innocent as it certainly was, but the way the sign reads now it gives the impression that the casino is here. I would like to see, in order of preference: 1) Replace the old sign and move the Casino to a blue "ATTRACTIONS" sign. I don't see this one happening, after speaking with SHA it was pretty clear they consider the Casino green-sign worthy. There are also numerous other ones on MD 100 and MD 295 already. I spent time in MO recently and that's how I saw it done out there. Besides, we might even need one to put Belmont on there soon. 2) Change the sign to read "Elkridge Exit 43A / Maryland Live Casino Exit 43A". There is precedence for this on I-95 already. It breaks the association of the two entities and lets Elkridge still have a sign 3) Remove Elkridge altogether and replace it with Hanover. Like it or not, that's where the Casino is. The sign would no longer be misleading. Of course, Elkridge loses it's I-95 signage completely, but we have enough traffic already, right? Other than opinion and prehaps some level of precedent, I also put forth the argument that people looking for the casino may turn on US1 N by accident since it also says Elkridge

The state should not be advertising private businesses on highway signs. If the casino gets the state to make them a sign, then I say Cindy's Soft Serve should get equal treatment.

Drew: I agree totally!! Maybe we can fight it after all the casino has nothing to do with Elkridge...
DawnP June 26, 2012 at 03:51 PM
My thoughts exactly. Why should this private business be singled out for free advertising on the highways?

Could you elaborate on point #2—could you specify the precedent? Thank you!

Sure, there is at least one sign I just saw this past weekend on I-95 South that doubles up two destinations but separates them by saying "EXIT XX" for each of them. I forget if it's for 175, 32, 216, 198, one of those interchanges :) It's along the lines of "SAVAGE EXIT XX / JESSUP EXIT XX", where XX is the same exit number.

Yeah, let's put Cindy's Soft Serve Ice Cream there and dump the Casino! It is definitely not in Elkridge!
elkridgemom June 27, 2012 at 02:20 PM
i love it! Cindy's is Elkridge..the casino is not. The sign on the Parkway north only says Maryland LIve Casino..there is no city on there? Has anyone been able to get an answer as to why SHA put the Elkridge name on the sign?
CVilleLover June 27, 2012 at 03:04 PM
Right after the casino opened, there were a lot of cars that would get off at the Route 1N exit. They would almost immediately turn back around and get back on 100. I would guess they thought that the sign meant the Casino was in Elkridge. It is a little misleading.

That should be grounds for changing the sign, if it's confusing to the motorist. Somehow, I don't think just our distaste for the sign will sway the SHA.

We asked the SHA some of the questions posed on this thread. The article is here: http://patch.com/A-v8nY
