Spring Means Blessing of the Bikes at Daniels

In late February, bikers were gathering at Daniels Bar, which sees more business in the spring and summer, according to the bartender.

At Daniels Restaurant and Bar on Route 1 in late February six bikers, all driving Harley Davidson motorcycles were drinking beers, were talking politics and guns.

When one biker rolled in on a blue Harley with classic rock blasting from his speakers, another biker sitting at the bar turned to him and said, "Hey, you want to listen to the radio, buy a car."

The bartender, Mary Martin, said now that the weather is getting warmer, business is starting to pick up.

On May 5, the bar hosts its annual Blessing of the Bikes celebration. The event starts at 3 p.m. and will include live music by Great Train Robbery and $2 Budweiser bottles, according to a sign posted near the horseshoe pit in the back of the bar.

The Blessing is "kind of sort of" a welcoming of spring for the bar, said Martin. The event features a minister who gives a small prayer for each bike and splashes a bit of holy water on them.

The bar outside is open all through the winter, but as spring starts to roll in, more and more bikers do as well, according to Martin.

One of the bikers, who was from Ellicott City, but declined to give his name, said it's the only bar in the state that he knew of where bikers could pull up and have a drink.
