The Main St. Barbershop Makes the Cut with Kids

The Route 1 shop has won the hearts of readers, and the trust of their kids.


The is Elkridge’s favorite place to take kids for a trim, according to a .

“Both my boys got their very first haircut at Main Street—a memory we all will treasure,” wrote Linda Howard .

In a poll to find where kids went to get their hair cut in Elkridge,  swept up 30 percent of the vote. In addition, it had more positive reviews on Patch than any other hair salon or barber in Elkridge.

The barbershop, located at the intersection of Route 1 and Montgomery Road, presents children who get their first haircuts with a certificate and a Polaroid picture, in addition to a little bag for a lock of hair as a souvenir.

"First-time haircuts are the best," said Angie Barth, one of seven stylists at the barbershop. The second time they come in can be harder, she said, because kids know what to expect and some may be afraid of the cape or the sound of the clippers.

Since all the stylists have children, said Barth, "We're used to it." The secret? "Patience."

The barbershop's owner, Angie Cornelison, said she strives to create an atmosphere that also helps people feel at home. "I love what I do," said Cornelison. "It's relaxing," a feeling she wants to share with patrons and staff alike.

"Clients feel it when they walk in," said Cornelison, who has set up a children's play area near the door and an open feel where the barbers' chairs are. There's a separate space for women's hair coloring and a massage room in the back.

“My whole family goes here for haircuts," wrote Tammy Ott  on Patch. "They are great with the kids." She gave The Main St. Barbershop five stars.

“I wouldn't take my family anywhere else. They are the best!” commented Phyllis Lawson. On an article about where to find the best place for kids to get a haircut in Elkridge, Lawson wrote: “Main St. Barbershop, of course!”
