Howard Hospital Foundation Receives $1 Million Donation

Howard Hospital Foundation, which provides philanthropic support to Howard County General Hospital, received a $1 million donation from Robert and Susan Fischell, husband-and-wife residents of Howard County. Robert Fischell is an inventor and former physicist at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Md.

“I appreciated the care that my late wife and my current wife have received at the hospital throughout the years,” Robert Fischell said. “So why not give back?”

The donation supports Howard County General Hospital’s Campus Development Plan, a completed 233,656-square-foot expansion and renovation project. The Fischells’ donation achieves the Howard Hospital Foundation’s goal of raising $30 million, completing the Campus Development Plan fundraising campaign. The public phase of the campaign began in November 2007.

Howard County General Hospital will recognize the Fischells for their donation with the naming of The Susan and Robert Fischell Cardiac Monitoring Unit.

“We are truly thankful to the Fischells for their generous gift. Their vision of seeing and addressing a need aligns so well with the hospital,” said Sandy Harriman, vice president of development for the Howard Hospital Foundation.

Robert Fischell raised his family in Howard County and spent nearly three decades as a physicist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Now he spends his days inventing medical devices at the home he designed in Dayton, Md. His medical devices, such as coronary stents and the implantable heart defibrillator, have been used at hospitals around the world.
