Renting a room gets more expensive, hearing about Elkridge home, and more.

Temperatures may climb to 98 degrees today in Elkridge, according to the National Weather Service. The low is 70 degrees, and there's a 30 percent chance of rain. 

Lawmakers reached an agreement to raise the federal debt ceiling Sunday night, days before the Aug. 2 deadline. According to the Washington Post, the new compromise includes spending cuts and no new taxes.

One Howard County tax that passed earlier this year will take effect this month. The hotel tax increase, from 5 to 7 percent, began July 26; this marks the first full month that renters and hotel operators will have to pay up. The in Elkridge has noted the change at the bottom of its website. The tax, which passed through the county and state earlier this year, will provide additional revenue for Howard County Tourism and Economic Development Authority.

This afternoon the county's Hearing Examiner will hold a public hearing on one Elkridge homeowner's request for a setback variance to build a deck at 6370 Beechfield Avenue. The hearing will be at 4:30 p.m. in Ellicott City's . It is open to the public.
