Elkridge Today: MLK Day

What's happening on the holiday and where you can get a four-course lunch in Elkridge for $15.

Schools are closed in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and so are banks.

County-run senior centers, government offices, courts, libraries and the animal shelter will also be closed.

While it may be a federal holiday, that doesn't mean restaurants are taking the day off. In fact, Howard County Restaurant Weeks begin today. This year’s theme is “Save and Savor Global Flavor.”

During the event, which lasts through Jan. 30, participating restaurants offer fixed-price lunch menus for $15.12 and dinner menus for $30.12. Two Elkridge restaurants are among the 20 establishments participating countywide: and .

In case you missed it, on Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens beat the Houston Texans, 20-13. The Ravens will take on the Patriots next week at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. The game will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, according to ESPN.

Pictured is a statue at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, which was installed in Washington, D.C., in August 2011. Today there will be a ceremony at 8 a.m. on The Mall to honor King.

Baltimore is hosting its own King tribute, at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. From 12–5 p.m., the museum will have musical and dance performances, crafts, films and a keynote speaker.

In Howard County, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commemorative Commission welcomes citizens to participate in its "Day of Service" in King's honor. The commission seeks volunteers to help put together emergency kits for the needy, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at 6751 Columbia Gateway in Columbia. See the flyer for details.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January, on a date that falls close to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, which was Jan. 15.
