Council to meet, hold the trash and more.

FLOOD ALERT, TEMPERATURE DROP: The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood watch for Howard County, in effect through Tuesday evening. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s in Elkridge today, according to the NWS, which said a slow-moving front interacting with Tropical Depression Lee was producing downpours.

CURBSIDE PICKUP: Waste collection is on a sliding schedule as a result of the holiday, meaning that you should put out trash or recycling the day after your normal pickup day.

COUNTY COUNCIL: The County Council will meet on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Ellicott City’s George Howard Building. On the agenda:

  • A resolution confirming the appointment of Sang W. Oh to the Board of Directors of the Economic Development Authority. See the resolution: CR135-2011.
  • A resolution to transfer the 634-unit residential rental housing facility located in Elkridge known as the “Sherwood Crossing Apartments”—which was refinanced—by WLA Sherwood Investors VI, L.L.C. to KMF Sherwood Crossing, LLC. See the resolution: CR145-2011.
  • An act transferring $600,000 from the initiative to extend Dorsey Run Road from MD 103 to MD 175 and putting it toward a review of state/county shared intersections. See the act: TAO1-FY2012.
  • A resolution to limit the county’s ability to exercise eminent domain in the name of private economic development. See the resolution: CR150-2011

ON THIS DAY in 1997, the Washington Post wrote about Howard County’s labor shortage. According to this article, the Economic Development Authority sought to attract the county’s many commuters to local jobs, through a website and radio spots. According to the latest census numbers, the average Howard County resident has a 30-minute commute to work.
