Elkridge Today: September 7

Expect to get soaked.

It’s going to rain most of the day. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch, effective through the afternoon for central Maryland, including Howard County. “The threat for heavy rain will persist through at least Thursday,” said the NWS, reporting that Tropical Storm Lee “interacting with a warm front” was causing heavy rains. If you plan to drive, keep this information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in mind:

  • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling.
  • A foot of water will float many vehicles.
  • Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks.
  • Watch for flooding at bridges and dips in the road. If it looks flooded, turn around; don't drown.

On this day in 2010, the Elkridge Chiropractic Center got a tune-up when it moved its office from the 6300 block of Washington Boulevard to the newly built Meadowridge Center near MD 100 at MD 103.

On this day in 1995, the Baltimore Sun reported that then-principal of (ELMS) received a $25,000 award for his innovative leadership. According to the article, Principal Kenneth T. Gill was commended for his attentiveness to students, willingness to pilot programs like peer mediation, and leadership of the school system’s human relations task force in 1992, which the Sun said was “a time of strained racial relations in the county's schools.”
