Elkridge Young Marines, Howard County Scouts Memorialize the Fallen

Soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice honored at Timonium, Catonsville cemeteries.

 

Before Memorial Day, several organizations, including one from Elkridge, have been preparing for the May 28 remembrance of soldiers who lost their lives.

The Elkridge Young Marines were out Saturday morning planting flags by the 3,500 graves of the fallen, according to ABC 2 News, before a large memorial service on Monday at in Timonium.

On Monday, the ceremony will open at 10 a.m. in The Circle of the Immortals—a veterans’ garden within —to honor seven recently fallen members of the military with ties to Maryland. There will also be tributes to all soldiers who have served, are still serving or who gave their lives in battle. A 21-gun salute and Taps will conclude the ceremony.

The secretary of veteran affairs for Maryland, Edward Chow, Jr., a Vietnam veteran, will deliver the keynote speech. Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger and Maryland’s senior Air National Guard officer Brigadier General Allyson Solomon will give memorial addresses. The Patriot Guard Riders, a national group of motorcyclists largely composed of veterans, will attend, as will the Maryland Army National Guard with a Black Hawk helicopter.

On Friday, Boy Scouts from Baltimore and Howard counties held a tribute ceremony of their own, gathered at in Catonsville.

More than 1,500 scouts participated in the 25th annual "We Remember" service, including Troop 702 from Columbia; Troop 109 from Halethorpe; Troop 350 from Chase; Troop 447 from Linthicum; Troop 1120 from Eldersburg; and Troops 615, 874, 944, 333 and 874 from Ellicott City.
