Flash Mob Breaks Out at Mayfield Woods Middle School

Elkridge teachers surprised their students with a new routine at the end of the school year.

Some teachers were heading to the U2 concert to cap off their school year, said Nancy Cohen, who teaches eighth grade and went to see the band. But she and two other teachers devised a plan so that even those who weren't going to M&T Bank Stadium could end the year on a musical note.

"Usually, we come out on the last day and wave to the kids," said eighth grade teacher Loretta Hutzell. "But this year we started something where we come out every day." She explained that teachers began escorting students to the buses daily to streamline the departure process. For the last day of school, "we figured we should do something to make it special," she said.

Hutzell came up with the idea of a flash mob and shared it with other teachers at a staff meeting a few weeks before the end of school. Cohen, whose niece did a flash mob in her Montgomery County school, said "it was really big this year" and staff warmed up to the idea.

At noon on June 22, all the Mayfield Woods teachers gathered in red t-shirts outside the school to see the kids off. Bus drivers had been instructed to wait a few minutes before departing, said Cohen.

Then, "School's Out" began to play, and in sync, dozens of teachers turned, stepped and clapped to the routine that P.E. teacher Danielle King choreographed for them. King, who's a zumba teacher outside of school, said she typed up the steps for the dance and posted them on the school intranet so her colleagues could do their homework before the big day.

"It was just a fun thing to do and a great way to get the whole staff involved," said Cohen. "I think we’re all leaving with a smile on our face."
