Flood Watch: Heavy Rain in the Forecast for Elkridge

Heavy rains today could lead to 2 inches of rain in the area, according to the National Weather Service.

It was nice while it lasted, but the sun is gone for a few days and the National Weather Service (NWS) Tuesday has issued a flood watch for Howard County and much of the Baltimore-Washington metro area.

Rain should start at about 3 p.m. according to NWS and we can expect moderate to heavy rainfall Tuesday afternoon and evening. In all, we may see between one and two inches of rain.

According to the forecast discussion, this time of year there is more rainwater runoff than there is rain soaked into the soil.

Runoff coupled with the amount of rain forecast can lead to small streams and creaks rising out of their banks, according to NWS, causing local flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas.

If you live by such a stream, NWS suggests monitoring the forecast closely.

In other areas of the state, a forecasted "wintry mix" has led NWS to issue a winter storm warning.
