UPDATED: Flooding Shut Down US 1 at Howard, Baltimore County Line

Police shut down Washington Boulevard in Elkridge at the Howard/Baltimore County lines Wednesday afternoon due to flooding.

The Patapsco River spilled onto US 1 south first, which was shut down at approximately 3:30 p.m. on the Baltimore County side, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Coordinated Highway Response Team.

By 4 p.m., the water had risen, and Howard County police shut down northbound lanes as well. Washington Boulevard was closed southbound at Levering Avenue in Elkridge and drivers directed to turn around on US 1.

“It was not like this in the morning,” said Jeff Thomas, a licensing and permitting specialist at on Main Street. Thomas said he’d been in Frederick this morning for work, and while it was wet there, “There wasn’t anything quite like this,” he said, recording the scene near the I 895 overpass with his phone. 

In addition to US 1, Main Street and Furnace Avenue were blocked off at approximately 4 p.m. to prevent drivers from getting near the water, which was continuing to rise as the rain continued.

By 6:45 p.m., all lanes had reopened and the water subsided.
