Heat Slows Down Trains on Wednesday Afternoon

Taking the Camden line? Officials anticipate 5- to 15-minute wait.

Trains on the Camden and Brunswick rail lines could be running a bit late on Wednesday afternoon, according to transportation officials.

The Maryland Transit Administration announced at 2 p.m. that heat orders are in effect for trains on those routes, causing 5- to 15-minute delays.

The slowdown is a precautionary measure, said officials.

Hot weather can cause welded rail to bend or kink, said Bob Sullivan, spokesman for CSX, the company that owns the rail lines. “Under normal circumstances, CSX applies heat orders in the northeast as the ambient temperature nears 90 degrees," he added.

The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures in the low 90s this afternoon in Elkridge.

As a result of the heat orders, passenger trains must travel 20 mph under the allowed limit, said Sullivan.
