July 3 Howard County Storm Recovery Guide

More than 9,000 people are without power in Howard County at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, four days after a storm knocked out utilities across Maryland.

BGE announced it will be working on restoration at the following locations:

  • Columbia (including Long Reach and Howard Community College)
  • Elkridge (which BGE listed under Anne Arundel County)
  • Ellicott City
  • Jessup (Champion Forest)
  • Laurel and North Laurel
  • Western Howard: West Friendship, Highland, Dayton, Ashton

There are several options for residents to stay cool on Tuesday, when the high is 93 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Free Cooling Shelters

Howard County has opened the following as cooling shelters:

  • ELLICOTT CITY: Roger Carter Center; 7 a.m.–9 p.m.;, 8:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m.
  • COLUMBIA: Central Branch Library, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; East Columbia Library, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Bain Center, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; East Columbia Senior Center, 9 a.m.–8:30 p.m.; Longwood Senior Center, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • ELKRIDGE: Elkridge Branch Library,10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Elkridge Senior Center, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • NORTH LAUREL: North Laurel Community Center; 7 a.m.–9 p.m. (no phones/Internet); North Laurel Senior Center, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • GLENWOOD: Glenwood Branch; 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Glenwood Senior Center, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Gary J. Arthur Community Center, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • LISBON: Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department, 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
  • SAVAGE: Savage Branch Library, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.

Free Showers

Rinse off at these locations, which are offering free showers Tuesday.

  • , 5:30 a.m.–9:45 p.m.
  • West Friendship Volunteer Fire Station, 5 a.m.–9 p.m.
  • Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department, 5 p.m.–9 p.m.

Free Water

• The "water buffalo," where residents can fill up on fresh drinking water, will be at the Gary J. Arthur Community Center in Cooksville Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents in need of water should bring their own clean containers to fill. 

Traffic Complications

Two roads are closed, according to County Executive Ken Ulman’s Facebook page:

  • ELLICOTT CITY/WEST FRIENDSHIP: Folly Quarter Road between Jumpers Hill Lane and Homewood Road/Sheppard Lane
  • WOODBINE: Union Chapel Road between Macneille Road and Daisy Road

These traffic signals are out, according to Ulman’s Facebook post:

  • ELLICOTT CITY: US 29 at I-70; US 40 at Turf Valley Road; Columbia Road at Dorsey Hall Drive; Centennial Lane at Old Annapolis Road
  • LAUREL: Johns Hopkins Road at Applied Physics Laboratory; Johns Hopkins Road at Sanner Road
  • CLARKSVILLE: Browns Bridge at MD 216
  • LISBON: Carrs Mill at MD 97

Cancellations/Closings

The Howard County Police Department cancelled its community athletic program scheduled for Tuesday. It will resume on Thursday, July 5, at the North Laurel Community Center.

Activities are cancelled at 14 schools that are closed Tuesday within the Howard County Public School System.
