Overcrowding May Pave Way for new Elkridge Elementary School

Ducketts Lane will be over capacity by 2019 according to school official, resulting in the need for another elementary school soon.

Howard County Public School System’s manager of school planning suggested the School Board buy a parcel of land for a new elementary school next to the new middle school in the Oxford Square development, Howard County Times reported.

HCPSS Executive Director said at a BOE meeting June 27, that buying the land “sooner is better” than later, the Timesreported, and Gallihue said a new elementary school would need to open by 2019 because by then, Ducketts Lane Elementary School will over capacity. 

According to the Times, the site in question is slated for residential development, but with approval from the planning board, the residential buildings can be moved to another site in the development.

A public hearing on the site’s future will be held on August 15; the board will vote on buying the land September 12.
