Postal Service Will Continue Saturday Delivery

Despite an announcement earlier this year, the Post Office will continue its six-day delivery schedule.

Disappointed that you won’t be getting mail delivered on Saturdays?

Good news! The U.S. Postal Service has changed its mind. Or rather, Congress did it for them.

In February, the Postal Service announced it would end most Saturday mail delivery as of Aug. 1. But, according to US News and World Report, Congress added language to its recently passed Continuing Resolution that prohibits the Postal Service from changing its service schedule.

A statement from the USPS Board of Governors said the Postal Service was “disappointed,” but would follow the law.

The Board said it had hoped to save $2 billion by cutting Saturday service. Currently, the Postal Service loses $25 million per day, according to USNWR, and lost $16 billion last year.

“It is not possible for the Postal Service to meet significant cost reduction goals without changing its delivery schedule …” according to the statement from the Board.

“Delaying responsible changes to the Postal Service business model only increases the potential that the Postal Service may become a burden to the American taxpayer, which is avoidable.”

In January, the Postal Service raised the price of a stamp from 45 to 46 cents.
