Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Howard County

Storms may hit after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Howard County until 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Officials expect storms to hit the Elkridge area after 2 p.m., with accompanying strong winds.

The NWS classifies a thunderstorm as "severe" if it is capable of producing winds of at least 58 mph and/or hail that is at least 1 inch in diameter.

Storm watches cover a 3- to 8-hour period, according to the NWS; in contrast, a "warning" is issued if the weather has already been observed or is expected "soon."

Monday afternoon's severe thunderstorm watch spans much of central and western Maryland in addition to parts of West Virginia and Virginia. The NWS issued the watch at 10:50 a.m. It expires at 6 p.m. on Monday.
