Things to Know About Elkridge Today: June 8

Head into the day a little more informed.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. for much of the Baltimore-Washington area, including Howard County. Today’s high is 95 (which could feel like 101, on the heat index) with a low of 72, according to the NWS. Officials advise staying hydrated and inside as much as possible.

The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued an air quality alert for Howard, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Anne Arundel counties today. That means pollution could become concentrated and unhealthy for children, the elderly, and people with asthma, heart issues or lung conditions. Officials recommend those groups avoid strenuous or outdoor activity.

principal Dr. Diane Mumford wrote an email to parents yesterday informing them that during hot days, the school would take the following precautions: holding recess indoors and using the gym for physical education. She also said there would be frequent water breaks and assured parents that the air conditioning is working in the school.
