Who Picks Up Pieces of Damaged Elkridge Sign?

Police report having no knowledge of the damage; community association that built the sign no longer exists.

"ELKRIDGE" in large letters reminds travelers on Washington Boulevard where they are, the word etched in stone on a pair of brick signs that bookend Old Washington Road.

The sign at the north end of Old Washington stands untouched, with an old by its side. However, its south end mate has a chunk of bricks missing, strewn around the ground in the surrounding median strip.

Howard County police said there have been no reports of destruction of property or vehicle collisions in that vicinity since Aug. 2.

"It’s possible it has not been reported to police," said Elizabeth Schroen, spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department.

The organization that built the sign has been defunct for years, according to residents.

"The Elkridge Business Association maintained the signs in the past, and I am not sure what organization is still around aside from GECA that would take care of them anymore," said Howard Johnson, president of the Greater Elkridge Community Association (GECA).

"Looks like a board meeting item for this month," he added.

The board typically meets the fourth week in August, according to the GECA website.
