"Arte En Estambre" (Yarn Paintings)
Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Francisco Loza is currently an Artist in Residence at The Creative Alliance, Baltimore. Working on wood covered with a wax adhesive base, he intricately weaves together brilliantly colored yarn, thread-by-thread, a technique he learned during 15 years spent with Huichol artisans in Central Western Mexico. Loza’s art reflects many aspects of Huichol sacred traditions shared with him by shamans who lead celebrations honoring man’s relationship to spirit and nature, capturing the cultural essence and unique symbolic language of the Huicholes people, as well as scenes from daily life and Mexican traditions. Loza also creates art depicting African traditions, jazz musicians, and powerful 3-D images.
Folk Artist Extraordinaire
Loza has taught Huichol Yarn Art workshops and exhibited at The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, The American Visionary Art Museum, and The Walters Art Museum. See more of his art here: http://www.stilllifegallery.net/francisco-loza/
