Civil War Expert Dan Toomey to Speak

Please join us for our next General Meeting and our long-awaited presentation by Dan Toomey, described below. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served. Bring friends and family! This will be a real treat for the railroad-buffs and history-buffs of Howard County.

During the Civil War, the Union Army formed a special organization to guard the railroad tracks that ran from Baltimore City to Relay and from Relay to Annapolis Junction. Known as the Railroad Brigade, this unit’s area of responsibility eventually spread west to Harpers Ferry. Dan Toomey will tell us about the Railroad Brigade and other events of local interest based on his soon to be published book The War Came by Train, The B&O Railroad During the Civil War.

Daniel Carroll Toomey is considered a leading authority on the Civil War in Maryland. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he is the author or co-author of ten books relating to that subject including The Civil War in Maryland, Baltimore During the Civil War, and The Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers Home. He has lectured for a number of colleges and institutions including Johns Hopkins University and the Smithsonian Institution.
