Elkridge Woman Named Preservationist of the Year

Preservation Howard County presented Cathy Hudson of Lawyers Hill with award.

Lawyers Hill resident Cathy Hudson has been named Preservationist of the Year by Preservation Howard County, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the county's historic sites.

Hudson was recognized for "her continued advocacy for preservation,” said Fred Dorsey, president of Preservation Howard County.

He noted Hudson's dedication to the following causes in Elkridge:

  • Elkridge Assembly Rooms: The old hall on Lawyers Hill Road was built post Civil War, in 1871, as a place for Union and Confederate supporters in the neighborhood to come together "in harmony and friendship," said Dorsey. It was used for plays and entertainment back then, and Dorsey said Hudson has helped preserve the physical appearance and the "spirit of why it was built" through events and potlucks.
  • Belmont, route: {:controller=>"listings", :action=>"show", :id=>"belmont-conference-center"} -->: Howard County on Belmont Woods Road, which was built in 1738 by Caleb Dorsey, after previous owner Howard Community College attempted to develop it. "Cathy was active in a grassroots movement to advocate for Belmont to see that the heritage and integrity of the buildings and property were not compromised by the planned actions of the Howard Community College," said Dorsey.
