National Get Outdoors Day is Saturday, June 9

Celebrate at Patapsco Valley State Park's Avalon area.


Gov. Martin O'Malley has proclaimed June Great Outdoors Month in Maryland.

“June marks the start of summer, the and the perfect time to plan for outdoor activities, whether it’s in your backyard, your neighborhood, along our waterways or in Maryland’s parks and forests,” O’Malley said in a statement.

Great Outdoors Month in Maryland kicks off in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day on June 9 and culminates with the Great American Backyard Campout on June 23.

There are 40 state parks in Maryland, and the National Get Outdoors Day celebration closest to Elkridge is in Patapsco's Avalon area in Halethorpe. Find more events at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/.

NINJA RUN AT PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK
When: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 9
Where: Avalon area (5120 South St.) in Halethorpe
What:
 Hike some of the more rugged terrain that Patapsco Valley has to offer. Ninja costumes are encouraged, but weapons are not allowed (this includes throwing stars). For ages 12 and up; little ninjas can do the hike once the adults have left on their adventure. Meet at the Avalon area in the playground by shelters 104/105.
