White Christmas in Howard County? Not Likely This Year, or Ever

Snow on Christmas day is a rare occurrence in Howard County. Don't expect any this weekend.

In the past week, it’s been a common refrain: “It’s so warm. I hope it snows for Christmas.”

It may be mass amnesia, or wishful thinking, but snow on Christmas in Howard County? That’s not likely now, and it never has been.

“The probability of a white Christmas is somewhere around 10 percent for having snow fall on Christmas day,” said Bryan Jackson at the National Weather Service. The chance of just having some leftover snow on the ground is about 20 percent.

The six highest snowfalls on Christmas day were:

  • 1909: 9.3 inches
  • 1969: 6.1 inches
  • 1902: 3 inches
  • 1962: 2.9 inches
  • 1935: 1.2 inches
  • 2002: 1 inch

This year certainly won’t make the list. We can expect mild temperatures this weekend, with highs in the low-to-mid 40s on Saturday and in the mid-to-upper 40s on Sunday, Christmas day. Skies should be sunny on Saturday with a few clouds on Sunday.

The average Christmas day temperature taken at BWI over the past five years is about 48 degrees, so this weekend will be a bit chillier than average, actually.

But, yet again, no snow.
