Mommy, Why?

What do we tell them when they say "Mommy, why?" about Superfresh, CSX, unemployment, and Arundel Mills?

I'm not going to blog about real estate this time, but as a mom and neighbor of Elkridge.

Our little man is having a hard time understanding the changes going on and the changes that might happen in the area.

He can't understand why they are closing the . We have been shopping there since he was born. With tears running down his cheeks, he said when we went for groceries earlier this week, "Why is everything '% off'? Where will they all go?" he asked about the employees. "Why are they closing the store? Where will we shop? I will miss them. Mommy, why?"

He has been seeing all the "Stop Intermodal Now" signs and asked, "What does it mean? What is it?" So I try to explain to him. "Why here?" Don't have an answer for that. "Will we still be able to play outside? Will people have to move? Mommy, why?"

We stop by Arundel Mills to purchase some clothes for him. I know it is not in Elkridge, but he thinks so. We couldn't park by his favorite store because they have started the big hole for the new casino. "What is a casino?" he asked. "Why do grown-ups go there? Why do they have to build it on the parking lot, where my stores are? Now, where do we park? Mommy, why?"

He came home from school and said, "Mommy why does my friend have to move?" Well, his Daddy lost his job and has not been able to find work for a while. "Why won't someone hire him? Don't they know he needs a job? Mommy, why?"

It is business.

"Don't they care about us and other families?" In business, sometimes people have  to do things  to make money. "Don't they know money does not make you happy? There are many people that don't have money that are happy and there are people with money that are very sad. Like the man with no pants." Who? "You know, the play we saw over Christmas." Oh, you mean Scrooge (he wore only a nightshirt in the play). "Yes him, he was sad and had no one to love or love him and had a lot of money. So Mommy, why do they want more money? Mommy, why? Mommy, why?"

That's the big question, and what do you say? Mommy is supposed to know why, but this Mommy does not know why.

So what do you think? Can you help me? Can you tell this Mommy why?
