Columbia Driver Hits Police Car, Charged with DUI

Yolanda Murchison jumped a curb by Route 1 in North Laurel and struck a marked Howard County police cruiser, according to police.

A Columbia woman is in jail and a police officer is in the hospital after a Saturday morning crash on Route 1 in North Laurel, according to the Howard County Police Department (HCPD).

At approximately 1:24 a.m. on July 28, Yolanda Murchison was driving her Chevrolet Cruze northbound on Route 1 at Davis Avenue when she "jumped the curb and drove across the median and struck the right rear of the police vehicle," according to a statement from HCPD.

The marked police car was at a stop sign about to turn on Davis Avenue at the time of the crash, HCPD spokesman Cpl. Christopher Adams told Patch.

The police officer was taken by ambulance to , where HCPD said he was in stable condition Saturday morning.

Murchison, 30, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), according to the statement from police.

"She was charged with DUI only," Bryce Buell, spokesman for HCPD, told Patch. "However, there will be additional charges pending the completion of the investigation."

The police statement said alcohol and failure to stay right of center were factors in the crash.

According to online court records, Murchison was charged June 24 for driving with a suspended license; in that incident, she was on Route 1 at Howard Street, approximately 2 miles north of the July 28 crash.

Murchison was at the Howard County Detention Center Saturday morning.

Geez, what are the odds of a drunk driver jumping a curb and smashing into a stationary unmarked police car?! She should buy a Power Ball ticket today. With her odds, one ticket will do it.

Police said it was a marked car. But still!

Good eye. I read it too fast.

What an idiot!

Really hope she loses her license. Someone could have been killed.

Drug possession conviction at age 18 (2000), then a motor vehicle tort (likely a vehicle collision) at age 20. Her first license suspension was when she was cited for speeding (74 in 55) on 10/19/2009 and failed to appear. The suspension was for 1/13/2010 - 6/15/2010. Then this happened: - driving with a suspended license on 3/18/2010. - driving without a seatbelt 8/23/2010 (failed to appear, and another suspension) - speeding (68 in a 45) on 11/2/2010 (failed to appear, and overlapping suspension 1/20/2011 to 2/25/2011) - driving w/ suspended license (2 counts), driving without required stop lamps (brake lights), , and failure to notify of change of address on 2/16/2011 - speeding (49 in 25) on 3/26/2011 - conviction for failure to comply with suspension entered 5/2/2011, resulting in more suspension - driving with suspended registration 3/13/2012 - conviction for failure to comply with suspension entered 4/18/2012 - driving with suspended license (2 counts) and failure to comply with traffic control device instructions 4/4/2012 - failure to secure child in child safety seat - failure to comply suspension entered 6/12/2012 - driving with suspended license 6/24/2012 (case still active) She's also lost a lawsuit to Apartment Services, Inc., who manages the complex where she lived in Severn, and to Henderson-Webb, Inc., manager of the apartment complex where she lived in Columbia. She should be in prison, and her car seized.

How does one find all this?
BOH July 29, 2012 at 12:48 AM
Barry, I got it from her court records online: http://casesearch.courts.state.md.us/inquiry/inquiry-results.jsp?action=Search&d-16544-s=7&filingDate=&filingStart=&courtSystem=B&d-16544-o=2&filingEnd=&firstName=YOLANDA&company=N&lastName=MURCHISON&site=00&d-16544-p=1&partyType=&countyName=&middleName=

I'd bet that we (the tax payers) foot the bill for section 8 housing and all expenses for her poor kid.
BOH July 29, 2012 at 02:03 PM
K, I don't know how you could reach that conclusion. She's actually been sued twice by apt mgmt companies, so it would appear she's been skipping out on thousands in rent.

I love that court records are public information online, every state should have this information readily available. Perhaps her hitting the police car was a blessing in disguise for every driver and pedestrian out there. Driving is a privilege (not a right), and she should lose this privilege. Glad that the police officer is okay.

another out-of-control leech on society.

BOH - Agree 100%. Driving should be limited to those who do so carefully and respect the rules of the road. This "lady" has had more than enough chances; she is a threat to all of us. How much does it take to pull a license for good? Of course, she'll just drive without a license then. Seizing any vehicles she is driving should help with that; no matter to who owns them. MD (and Howard County's) treatment of drunk drivers is toothless; all first time offenders with no personal injury involved get forgiven (PBJ with no points on their records and no official guilty finding). Need to jail all offenders; everyone knows you shouldn't drive drunk, those who do should be jailed for a lengthy period of time with no forgiveness for first time offenses. Stats show one has to drive drunk many times before being stopped, so a first time DUI isn't the first time they've driven impaired.

Everyone makes mistakes - once is a mistake, twice is a habit, and this, well this is more like an addiction. My issue would be with the court system. Sat in court one afternoon and watched the judge postpone every single case that day (did someone have a golf game?). The States attorney begged the judge not to postone one specific case stating that it had taken them 4 years to locate the defendant and in the those 4 years she had racked up 3 more charges Guess what .......postponed! Wander what ever happened to that defendant? Probably still racking up charges with no forwarding address :)

Seriously, leave this poor woman alone. I happen to know she is a lovely person and does not deserve this level of scrutiny of her life and personal business. Stop looking up her record online too, that just makes you a creep with too much time on their hands.
