Construction Worker Killed in Accident at Arundel Mills

Another man involved sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to shock trauma.

One person died and another man has life-threatening injuries after a wall collapsed on them outside Arundel Mills Mall Friday morning.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., emergency personnel received word that a 30-foot concrete wall fell on two construction workers while the pre-cast structure was being moved, said Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Chief Michael Cox.

One of the victims, a 25-year-old male, was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, Cox said.

Officials have not released information about the second individual, whose body is still trapped under the rubble, according to Cox.

“The operation has moved from a rescue to recovery,” Cox said.

As of 11:30 a.m., crews were awaiting the medical examiner to determine additional details and assistance from the “collapse unit,” an engine that can pull the wreckage off the individual.

Arundel Mills Circle near the Burlington Coat Factory and Off Broadway is closed to traffic while officials investigate.

The Friday morning incident marks the second time in a month that construction workers have been seriously injured while working the site.

Since January, developer the Cordish Company has been working on the construction site at Arundel Mills. Voters approved the plan to build a casino at Arundel Mills in November 2010.

The man trapped was 27 years old and had been working on a multi-level parking garage where slots would temporarily be housed, reported WBAL-TV.

Anne Arundel, Howard County and BWI rescue teams responded to Friday's call.
