Crash-and-Run on Lawyers Hill Knocks Out Power

Residents along Rowanberry, Montgomery Road and Lawyers Hill Road lost power after a vehicle crashed into a pole.

Four hundred people in Elkridge lost power Sunday evening after a vehicle crashed into a pole on Lawyers Hill Road.

Police said that they received reports of a fire on Lawyers Hill Road near Summer Home Terrace from a nearby resident just before 6 p.m.

“Numerous people on (Interstate) 95 saw it and called it in as well,” according to the Howard County Police Department’s communications center.

Police said that a driver crashed a vehicle into a pole and then ran. After the crash, power lines sparked, creating a small brush fire, said police.

Officers were still attempting to locate the driver at approximately 6:50 p.m. A helicopter and ground patrols were canvassing the area.

Residents from nearby developments trickled out onto Montgomery Road for information around 6:30 p.m.

One man on Rowanberry Drive said he had been cooking dinner when his power went out.

A Montgomery Woods woman said she was watching football when everything went dark.

Sirens and traffic lights were the only illumination near the intersection of Montgomery Road and Lawyers Hill between 6 and 7 p.m.

Police had closed Lawyers Hill Road between Bonnie View Lane and Montgomery Road, stationed around the area as the search for the suspect continued and to keep people away from the live wires. 

“We’re waiting for BGE,” said the police communications center. “They have to take care of the wires that are down" before Lawyers Hill Road would reopen.

Residents began regaining power at 7 p.m. According to BGE, 100 residences are still experiencing outages.
