“It was a motel and an apartment; one part was hotel and in the other part, there was a resident in the apartment that self-evacuated,” said Cutler.

The person did not need medical attention, said Cutler, and was not displaced since there were other units that had not been impacted at the motel.

The fire was contained to one unit and took approximately 15 minutes to bring under control, according to Cutler.

Washington Boulevard was closed at Old Washington Road to the north and Montgomery Road to the south as emergency vehicles gathered on Route 1 to assist.

More than 60 firefighters were called in because a motel is considered a high-occupancy structure, said Cutler.

She said it was unclear how the fire was reported. “There was a smoke alarm in the building, but they’re not sure if it was activated,” said Cutler. She added that police or a passerby may have called 911.

Cutler said Washington Boulevard would be restricted until about midnight.

The fire remains under investigation, said Cutler.
