Smoke Scare Reported at Deep Run Elementary

The Elkridge school on Old Waterloo Road was evacuated around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

was evacuated Friday after staff smelled smoke, said a representative from the fire department. 

“There was a report of smoke in the building. We isolated it to an air conditioning unit,” said Battalion Chief Sean Utz of Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. "It was a burned up fan belt."

There was no fire, said Utz.

Firefighters received the report that there was smoke in the building at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 17, said Utz.

Those inside the building were told to evacuate prior to the fire department’s arrival, and within five minutes of investigation, Utz said, firefighters cleared the building for re-entry.
