Four DUI Arrests on the Fourth

Howard County had a mostly peaceful 4th of July, according to police.

The Howard County Police Department reportedly made four DUI arrests on Wednesday, the 4th of July.

It was a noticeable turn from last year's festivities when 18 people were arrested for DUI over the 4th of July weekend and a juvenile was arrested after a fight broke out at the Columbia lakefront.

About 20,000 to 25,000 people attended this year's celebration in Columbia, according to Phil Bryan, superintendent of recreation activities for the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, a margin below the  to attend.

Bryan wrote in an email that the low turnout may have been the result of the heat and threatening inclement weather. Temperatures at the fireworks reached up to 90 degrees.

The show ended around 10 p.m. Police said they had cleared the roads within 45 minutes and had no traffic issues, according to police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn.
