Howard County Police Offer Post-Storm Driving Tips

Treat traffic lights that are out as four-way stops, and drive more slowly than usual, advise police.

With traffic signals out and trees still blocking some roadways Monday morning, Howard County police advised motorists to exercise additional caution in their travels following the weekend storm.

When approaching intersections where signals are out, police recommended halting before proceeding. "Treat nonfunctioning traffic lights as a four-way stop," wrote the Howard County Police Department (HCPD) on Facebook.

HCPD said that signals were out and officers were assisting at these locations Monday morning:

  • US 40 at Normandy Drive, Rogers Avenue, North Ridge Road, St. John’s Lane, North Chatham Road, Centennial Lane, Pine Orchard Drive and Pebble Beach Drive
  • MD 103 at New Cut Road
  • MD 32 at ramps to I-70 and MD 144 and at MD 99
  • MD 99 at US 29, St. John’s Lane and Bethany Lane

“Please slow down for the safety of officers, yourself and fellow drivers,” said HCPD on Facebook.

These roads are currently closed because of fallen trees or power lines, according to police:

  • Cornus Lane
  • Homewood Road from MD 108 to Farside Road
  • Old Frederick Road at Oak Forest Drive
  • Old Columbia Pike from Main Street to Hunter Road 

NOTE from HCDP: There are numerous additional locations with traffic hazards such as trees down or lights out—this is only a list of the major locations staffed with police.

Watch for debris in the roadways, cautioned police.

The State Highway Administration advised to keep an eye out for animals that may be crossing roads and fleeing dangerous areas.
