Minor Injury After Carport Fire in Savage

A firefighter was taken to the hospital for a burned finger.

A firefighter sustained minor injuries after a carport and house caught fire in Savage on Saturday evening, according to Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS). 

At approximately 8:50 p.m., neighbors on the 8000 block of Savage Guilford Road reported that a carport was on fire, said Battalion Chief Eric Proctor. 

“A neighbor saw it and called it in, then called them [the occupants] and told them their house was on fire,” said Proctor.

The family was able to get out of the house safely before officials arrived, according to HCDFRS, which said in a press release that the fire was under a carport and extended to the house.

"The car was on fire under the carport and catching the house on fire and it went from there," said Proctor.

It took firefighters from Prince George’s and Howard counties 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, according to HCDFRS.

Officials said that neighbors are assisting the family.

“One firefighter received a minor burn to a finger and was transported to ,” stated HCDFRS in the release. Proctor said the burn was from steam.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
