One Dead After Motorcycle Collides with Truck in Elkridge

Police say the motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet.

A 30-year-old Columbia man is dead after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a parked tractor-trailer in Elkridge Sunday, according to Howard County Police.

The traffic enforcement section is investigating the collision, which happened at about 12:45 p.m. Police say Juan Carlos Calderon Mejia, 30, was driving a 2001 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle east on Brookdale Drive, in Elkridge, when he lost control and struck the parked truck.

Mejia was taken by helicopter to University of Maryland Shock Trauma where, police say, he died from his injuries.

Police say Mejia did not have a motorcycle license and was not wearing a helmet. Motorcycle operators are required to wear protective headgear as outlined in the State Code.

The investigation so far indicates that speed was a contributing factor to the collision.

East and westbound Brookdale Drive in Elkridge was to traffic until 3:00 p.m. while police investigated.
