Overturned Vehicle on MD 100 Involved Police Pursuit

The Tuesday crash resulted in life-threatening injuries, said police.

A crash that shut down part of MD 100 on Tuesday involved a police pursuit, said Maryland State Police on Wednesday. The driver, whose car overturned, was in critical condition.

Officials said that at approximately 1:20 p.m., a state trooper spotted a black Cadillac CTS speeding eastbound on MD 100, so he turned around. Then he put on his lights and sirens "to get through the traffic in order to catch up with the speeder," said police.

“By the time he did get through traffic … the driver [had] attempted to take the off ramp to southbound Route 1,” said Maryland State Police spokeswoman Elena Russo. “As he took the ramp, the Cadillac lost control and overturned several times.”

Soon after 2 p.m., a helicopter landed on MD 100 to retrieve the driver, whom emergency personnel had to extricate from the vehicle, according to officials.

Mark Jackson, of an undisclosed address, is in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

“He has sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and was flown to Maryland shock trauma,” said Russo.

The ramp to US-1 south was closed to eastbound traffic for three hours on Tuesday as officials cleared the scene.

The trooper was uninjured, said Russo.

An investigation is ongoing.

A woman who identified herself as Jackson's mother contacted Patch and disputed that her son was being chased by police. "They were not pursuing him," she said in a phone call. "He is an upstanding Navy man," she said of her son.

In the comment section of the original article and through e-mail, Jackson's relatives said they were further distraught by the fact that they were not notified of the incident for more than 12 hours.
